THE GYM

Getting yourself to the gym. Get up and go.

I was terrified of the gym, even though I've been before I was afraid to go back. Why? Because I felt like I didn't know what I was doing, I didn't know where to start, what weights should I be lifting? how much cardio is enough? We've all been a newbie at something, we don't all know everything, we need to take it a step at a time.
The best way to motivate myself I find is to check out #fitspo on Instagram and Twitter, I then went and got a nice pair of trainers and I set myself a schedule. I decided one day that I was going to start the gym and so off I went, I didn't stay there long but it was a start...

So when you finally motivate yourself and get to the gym...

1. Make the most of your gym introduction. When you join a gym they always give you an introduction. Don't pretend you know what you're doing, ask questions, make sure you know how the machines work so you don't hurt yourself and so you're using it correctly.

2. Don't be afraid to ask for help. I've done this several times at my gym. Looked at a machine and thought...how do I do this right? Without breaking my back? The staff at the gym are there to help! And if you'd prefer to ask that muscle man over there doing sit ups, go for it. People are pretty friendly and most guys will be flattered if you ask them for help.

3. Read helpful articles online.I've read quite a few from Nerd Fitness.

4. Remember that changing your body takes time and it's not just about working out, it's about eating the right things to fuel your body.

  1. This is great advice!!! It goes right along with the newbie advice I posted about two weeks ago! Good for you for going back! Even though I have been there a long time, I still find it intimidating on days I'm doing new exercises. But I tell myself not to worry about the on-lookers, what I'm doing is for me not them!

    1. Exactly, you've got it girl! People really aren't interested in what you're doing, they're just trying to get through their workout!

  2. Thank you for this! I'm currently in the trying to pluck up the courage part of going to the gym, but these tips are going to be so useful when I get there.

    1. Join up and get down to the gym, book your introduction and even if you just start by going and walking/jogging on the treadmill for a few days it's still a start!

  3. Getting back into an exercise routine is so hard. I suffer with back back pain so whenever I really go for it I always suffer afterwards! But I've found a gym that just does fun classes like Box Fit and Beyonce dance classes so I'm trying to go there as much as possible instead!

    1. I think it's easier to exercise during fun classes like that because you're enjoying yourself instead of concentrating on how many calories you've burned on the cross trainer or how many miles you're running on the treadmill. Let me know what the Beyonce dance classes are like, they sound pretty cool!
